FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Get all the Important Answers for Your Next Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first visit by the child’s first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits help establish a dental home, prevent early childhood caries, and make future visits stress-free. At Montgomery Pediatric Dentistry and Milford Pediatric Dentistry, we specialize in welcoming infants and toddlers with gentle, fun techniques.

We provide care for children from infancy (around their first tooth or first birthday) up to age 16, tailored to each developmental stage.

Pediatric dentists complete 2–3 extra years of specialized residency training focused only on infants, children, teens, and special-needs patients. We are the “pediatricians of dentistry.” Our entire team (Drs. Lisa Rudolph, Petr Vaughan, Josh Cochran, and Allison Bailey) is board-certified and has advanced training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, so we use child-specific behavioral techniques, equipment, and sedation that general dentists rarely offer.

Yes! Baby teeth guide permanent teeth into place, help with speech and chewing, and hold space for adult teeth. Untreated decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection and affect the development of permanent teeth. We focus heavily on prevention so your child keeps those healthy smiles throughout the transition.

Most children need a check-up and cleaning every 6 months. High-risk kids (high sugar intake, special needs, or history of cavities) may benefit from more frequent visits. We create a personalized schedule based on your child’s needs and risk factors.

Start cleaning gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water from birth. As soon as the first tooth appears, use a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste twice daily (pea-size at age 3+). We demonstrate proper technique at every visit and recommend the right products for your child’s age.

Never put your child to bed with a bottle or a sippy cup containing anything other than water. Wipe gums/teeth after feedings and schedule the first dental visit by age 1. We provide tailored nutrition counseling and in-office fluoride/sealant programs that dramatically reduce the risk of early childhood caries.

Absolutely. All of our board-certified doctors have extensive experience caring for children with autism, ADHD, sensory issues, medical complexities, and more. We offer longer appointments, sensory-friendly scheduling, behavior management techniques, and access to in-office IV sedation or hospital dentistry when needed—right here in the Cincinnati area.

We provide a full range: nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), oral conscious sedation, and in-office IV sedation performed by our experienced pediatric dental team. For medically complex or extensive cases, we have privileges for hospital dentistry under general anesthesia. Safety is our #1 priority—parents love the comfort these options bring.

Yes—both are quick, painless, and highly effective. Dental sealants protect the grooves of back teeth from decay, and professional fluoride varnish strengthens enamel. We apply them routinely as part of our preventive program and explain exactly why your child will benefit.

We are in-network with most major dental insurance carriers in the Greater Cincinnati area, including many Medicaid plans. Our team verifies benefits before your visit and works hard to maximize your coverage so you know your out-of-pocket costs upfront.

Call us, visit https://montgomerypediatricdentistry.com/new-patients/insurance/, or contact our office at (513) 891-0660 to verify coverage or discuss payment options.

Your first visit is a “get-to-know-you” experience—no shots or drilling unless absolutely needed. We count teeth, check for decay, demonstrate brushing, and create a positive first memory with prizes, movies, and our fun office environment. Most parents say their child leaves smiling and excited to return.

Talk positively, read children’s books about dental visits, and avoid using the word “hurt.” Bring a comfort item (a stuffed animal or your favorite show on our TVs). Our team uses tell-show-do, distraction, and kid-approved language. Many anxious children become our biggest fans after just one visit, thanks to our gentle approach.

Yes—we prioritize same-day emergency care for toothaches, knocked-out teeth, broken teeth, or trauma. Call our office immediately; one of our doctors will guide you and see your child as quickly as possible. We also provide after-hours guidance for true emergencies.

We screen for orthodontic issues starting at age 7 (as recommended by the AAO). Early interceptive treatment can prevent more serious problems later. We work closely with trusted local orthodontists and will refer at the perfect time while continuing your child’s preventive care.

Our doctors are all board-certified pediatric specialists with Cincinnati Children’s training, we offer the complete spectrum from infant exams to IV sedation/hospital care, we create a genuinely fun and fear-free environment, and we accept most insurance while focusing on prevention first. Families throughout the Cincinnati area trust us to deliver gentle, expert, and joyful dental care that lasts a lifetime.
